5 Best Riviera Maya Day Trips

5 Best Riviera Maya Day Trips

Are you headed to Cancun, Playa Del Carmen or Tulum? If you are looking for a day trip that’s not your average tourist trap give these a try. These are our favorite places to visit with our Siestas For Fiestas beach blanket, we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

1. Coba Ruins + Cenote

Coba is by far one of our favorite places to explore. We love that you can explore these ruins on your own by bike. Rentals are available at the entrance and they are well worth it. They also still let you climb the ruins. Nearby you will find several cenotes. Our favorite is an underground cave called Tankach-Ha.

2. Chichen Itza

These beautiful Mayan Ruins are one of the new 7 wonders of the world. Be warned it's a long day and usually it's very hot but we promise it's worth seeing.

3. Any Cenote

Cenotes are natural pits, or sinkholes, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. They are beautiful and a must see when visiting the Riviera Maya. We've visited Cenote Azul, Gran Cenote, Cenote Jardin del Eden, Cenote Verde Lucero and Cenote 7 Bocas.

4. Akumal

This is located really close to Cenote Azul and Eden. You just go to this beach in Akumal and swim out and will find tons of giant turtles. Warning, you will be bombarded by people trying to sell you tours when you get to the beach. You don't have to buy one if you don't want to. Just make sure to rent a life vest and goggles and a snorkel if you don't already have them. They do have strict rules about touching the turtles so make sure to be respectful of the wildlife.

5. Sian Ka’an

This is a Biosphere Reserve located south of Tulum. We did the tour where you float down the mangroves. It's kinda like a giant lazy river. They have various tours that include different activities so make sure to do your research ahead of time.
